A $1.2 billion neighbourhood featuring five high-rises and six parks at Melbourne’s Docklands has been approved by the Victorian Government β€” but there was no word on a new school for the area.

The major development will see 1,500 apartments, six parks β€” including a high-tech, environmentally-friendly “eco-park” β€” and several townhouses built around Collins Wharf.

The new neighbourhood will also feature a boardwalk along the water, that will look out to a floating wetland.

Planning around Melbourne’s inner-city apartment boom over the past decade has been criticised by some residents who are concerned about the lack of infrastructure and services, including schools.

The State Government conceded several mistakes had been made in the developments of earlier projects.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the lack of schools and services had been a major deterrent for families looking to move into Docklands.
