The Chith Export Facility (pictured) at Rio Tinto’s new Amrun mining operation and the $40 million upgrade of Berth 4 at Port of Townsville were among the winning projects in the Queensland 2018 CCF Earth Awards.

The Civil Contractors Federation Queensland Earth Awards recognise excellence in civil construction including roads, bridges, railways, marine structures and utilities.

CCF Queensland chief executive officer Damian Long said the 25th CCF Earth Awards had received a record number of nominations.

“The projects highlighted are a great example of how the civil construction industry provides jobs and skilling opportunities for all Queenslanders,” Mr Long said.

The winners were:

Projects valued up to $2m: Doval Constructions: Mt Crosby Weir Pier and Sluice Gate Upgrade

The Mt Crosby Weir Pier 7 Repair and Sluice Gate Upgrade project was competed by Doval Constructions in late 2017 and provided much needed upgrades an integral part of Brisbane’s water supply network.

Projects valued between $2m and $5m: Piling & Civil Australia: Transmission Tower Foundation Replacement, Townsville

PCA Ground Engineering were contracted by Powerlink to undertake the replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region. The installation techniques that were developed enabled micropiles to be installed within a tolerance of less than 10mm through the existing steel grillage foundations, whilst also maintaining live line conditions. The project was a world first and a trial by Powerlink for wider use within their network.

Projects valued between $5m and $10m: Georgiou Group: Frew Lamington National Park Road Reconstruction

Georgiou was awarded the Frew Lamington National Park Road reconstruction contract in August 2017 after the region sustained significant damage as a result of Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie. Georgiou was responsible for all emergency work required to repair the damaged road network and associated infrastructure along three landslip sites along the road.

Projects valued betwen $10m and $30m: FKG Group: Warrago Highway Overtaking Lanes – Oakey to Dalby

In 2016, the FKG Group was engaged by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to deliver the construction of new overtaking lanes at four sites on the Warrago Highway located on a 43km stretch between Oakey and Dalby. The work included much-needed rehabilitation to the westbound and eastbound pavements and the construction of new lanes.

Projects valued between $30m and $75m: CivilPlus Construction:  Berth 4 Upgrade

CivilPlus Constructions delivered the $40.7m Berth 4 Upgrade Project to assist in accommodating projected trade growth at the Port of Townsville. The Berth 4 deck was raised and widened to become level with Berth 3, the length extended by 41m to a total of 241m, allowing a continuous quay line for Berths 2, 3 and 4.  A total of 256 new piles were installed and used to support the fully suspended formwork system for the heavily reinforced 5900 cubic metres of placed concrete.

Projects valued at more than $75m: Rio Tinto, Bechtel, Jacobs and McConnell Dowell: Amrun Chith Export Facility

Part of Rio Tinto’s new $2.6 billion Amrun bauxite project near Weipa, the Chith export facility was designed by Jacobs and constructed in only six months by McConnell Dowell. The Chith Export Facility, comprising a 650m access jetty and 350m wharf, will serve as a berth for ships while in port once the bauxite mine becomes operational. The project reformed the design concept by moving away from a traditional stick-built design to a modularised facility, with the wharf split into seven jackets, incorporating berthing and mooring dolphins and six topside modules.

The Queensland 2018 CCF Earth Award winners were announced on Friday night at The Star, Broad Beach, and they will now advance to contest the national awards in Canberra on November 16.
