A Burdekin Industry Breakfast on February 6 will highlight opportunities on the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade project and construction of a planned prawn farm.
The Infrastructure Group (TIG) project manager Campbell McCall will present on planning for the $514.3 million Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade project.
TIG is a joint venture between Bielby Holdings, BMD Constructions, JF Hull, Albern Pty Ltd, ARUP Group and HDR Inc.
Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the project would present plenty of opportunities for local industry.
“The Haughton River Floodplain Project will include a major road upgrade involving the replacement of three key bridges, realignment of the Reed Beds curve, upgrades to nine rural intersections, construction of two overpasses of cane train open level crossings, construction of a 13.5km new alignment west of the existing highway and the installation of wide centreline treatments,” she said.
“Department of Transport and Main Roads have announced that an average of 544 direct jobs will be supported over the life of this project. With TIG welcoming queries from local contractors regarding work packages for this project, I encourage all interested businesses to attend.”
Pacific Biotechnologies (formerly known as MBD Industries) project manager Pete McFarlane will provide an overview of plans to establish a new prawn aquaculture operation near Guthalungra.
The project will involve the staged construction of 250 hectares of new prawn ponds and infrastructure.
At full production the farm will produce approximately 2,500 tonnes of black tiger prawns and create more than 130 full time equivalent jobs.
Construction is planned to commence in May this year with the completion of Stage 1 by the end of June 2020.
Cr McLaughlin said attendees will also hear from Department of Industry, Innovation and Science business advisor Mark Osbourne.
The Burdekin Industry Breakfast will be held at the Burdekin Theatre, Ayr, from 7am Wednesday, February 6.
