Northern electricians shine in annual awards

Minelec’s role in the Capricorn Copper mine refurbishment works in north-west Queensland has seen it awarded Industrial Project of the Year at the Master Electricians North Queensland Excellence Awards for 2018.

Among the other winners was Mackay’s Linked Group Services, which received the Energy Efficiency Award for building its own innovative off-grid commercial solar power plant, mounted across several buildings.

Electrotek Qld collected four awards – Commercial Project of the Year for installing lighting, power and data in the Woman’s X-Ray Clinic Townsville, while its personnel took out the Women in Contracting Award, the Tradie of the Year and the Master Electrician of the Year.

Fellow Townsville contractor Horan & Bird was awarded Residential Project of the year for electrical, data, air-conditioning, solar and battery storage work on a new multi-story house and wharf, while its employee Naomi Burke was named the Legrand Apprentice of the Year.

MEA chief executive officer Malcolm Richards praised the high calibre of entries received in 2018 and said it was testament to the professionalism of many individuals in the industry, as well as the innovative electrical projects taking place.

“These winners will help lift the bar even higher for all Master Electricians members, and the wider electrical contracting industry. And it’s their customers – whether businesses or private individuals – who reap the benefits of an electrical contracting industry that is constantly striving for excellence,” he said.

All eight northern winners will go on to the compete in the National Master Electricians Excellence Awards. The results will be announced at a gala dinner in Brisbane on November 24.
