Key Smithfield Bypass contract awarded

A joint venture of Highway Construction and Albem Operations has been awarded the design and construction contract for the $152 million Smithfield Bypass project at Cairns.

Construction is due to start in late 2018, with works due to finish in late 2020, weather permitting.

Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said Highway Construction / Albem Operations Joint Venture was working with Transport and Main Roads on design solutions for the best outcome.

The Smithfield Bypass project is expected to support 115 full-time jobs during construction.

The Smithfield Bypass project is one of three significant road projects being rolled out in the Cairns region.

Construction of Stage 4 of the Kate Street to Aumuller Street project is expected to start in late August 2018.

In addition, construction of the Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Corridor – Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale highway duplication is expected to start late 2019.

Mr Crawford said it was a very exciting time to be part of the road-building industry in Cairns.

“There will undoubtedly be many more opportunities for Cairns-based businesses to get involved in the near future,” he said.
