Queensland has presented a strong field in the 2018 Architecture Awards program, with 174 entries from across the state.
Australian Institute of Architects executive director for Queensland Mell Greenall said the response included 74 submissions from regional Queensland.
“The strength of the entries continues to impress our state and regional juries, making their task of selecting a winner increasingly difficult,”she said.
Two regional projects which received accolades at the Queensland Architecture Awards in 2017 went on to take out national awards in November.
The Globe by Brian Hooper and m3architecture (architects in association) won the Public Architecture award.
This was a remodelling of a Barcaldine pub (above) described in judging as an essay in respecting timber single-skin construction and celebrating light and structure.
It was praised for its intricate restoration of existing fabric with the “embroidery” of new material and the architects’ commitment to act as custodians of architecture, sustaining the unique identity of this regional town with their design skill, restraint and intellectual rigour.
m3architecture also designed the Cape Tribulation house, an off-grid home in the Daintree rainforest (below), which took out the national title for Residential Architecture.
Ms Greenall said both projects exemplified the talents of the Queensland architecture community and highlighted their ability to celebrate Queensland’s unique physical and social environments.
Entries for the 2018 Queensland Architecture Awards closed on January 31, with the winners to be announced in June.
